SRQ has experienced substantial growth over the last year with the addition of Allegiant Air in April 2018, offering nonstop service to Cincinnati (CVG), Indianapolis (IND) and Pittsburgh (PIT) and bringing ultra-low-cost fares to SRQ. Growth continues with the addition of a second ultra-low-cost carrier, Frontier Airlines which began operating flights to three destinations, Atlanta (ATL), Cleveland (CLE) and Philadelphia (PHL) on December 10, 2018. SRQ now has 8 airlines serving 26 destinations!
As though that was not enough, more great news was announced in November. Allegiant will begin twice weekly service to Baltimore (BWI) and Ashville, NC (AVL) beginning February 22, 2019, just in time for Spring training. They will continue to expand their operation at SRQ with flights to Cleveland, OH (CLE), Columbus, OH (LCK), Grand Rapids, MI (GRR), Harrisburg, PA (MDT), Nashville, TN (BNA), Richmond, VA (RIC), and Syracuse, NY (SYR) starting in April 2019.
American Airlines began serving three new destinations, Dallas, TX (DFW) and Chicago, IL (ORD), last month and Philadelphia, PA (PHL) in January. Jetblue adds a second daily flight to Boston in January and Delta’s seasonal flights to Detroit and JFK returned last month. Traffic increases have averaged over 25% for the last 6 months.
Fredrick Piccolo, President and CEO of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority feels certain that there will be even more growth “In the airline industry, it seems that we start to build on this momentum, as one comes in, others come in and adds more service, so we’re certainly seeing this phenomenon play out”.
SRQ is ready for the growth. The FAA moved into a newly constructed tower this summer and the landscape project at the front entrance will be complete in the Spring. With the addition of the shade parking lot and the recent completion of the new air-conditioned loading bridges, the airport continues to offer many amenities that you just won’t find at other small airports. There are numerous food, beverage and shopping options both pre and post security. A covered rental car return lot, electric vehicle charging stations, a new welcome center, phone charging stations, Mamava nursing pods, a pet relief area and so much more. So next time you make your travel plans, check SRQ first!
